hEllo tHErE! 🎀(◔◡◔)🎀 hi, I’m Tanja Vujinovic (pronounced Tanya Vu-yen-ovich) but you can just call me Tanja V. if that’s easier. I’m a multimedia sculptress creating synthetic beings, virtual worlds, and ambient techno soundscapes. I’ve been exhibiting worldwide since the ‘90s, and my projects—Ultramono Lab / AvantGarden—explore the intersection of art, technology, and immersive experiences.

Longer Biography

Short Bio

Tanja Vujinovic is a multimedia artist who blends video art, gaming, music, and research to explore how technology shapes our lives. Through her ongoing project AvantGarden, she creates immersive installations—ranging from virtual reality worlds and digital sculptures to paintings—that are paired with her own ambient techno soundscapes. Her work looks at how electronic devices and synthetic environments influence us, often featuring small, playful figures inspired by dolls, figurines, and talismans that act as gentle guardians and companions.

Deeply inspired by gaming culture, Tanja builds virtual worlds using game engines and familiar digital aesthetics, creating spaces where art, play, and community merge. Whether in immersive VR installations or striking physical artworks, her projects blur the lines between human and machine, organic and synthetic. Over more than two decades, from early experiments like Supermono 2/3 to recent explorations in SynthPets, her art has been showcased at festivals, galleries, and online platforms worldwide.

Ultimately, her work is a joyful mix of speculative digital realms and tangible creations—a universe where ambient soundscapes, vivid visuals, and playful, futuristic elements come together to reimagine our digital future.

Artist Statement

I create immersive audiovisual worlds that blend art, technology, and visions of the future. My work explores how automation and human–machine interaction shape our reality, sparking our imagination. I build speculative worlds—whether in virtual environments, interactive installations, or even on canvas—filled with futuristic avatars, playful proto-machines, and synthetic beings that challenge our ideas about technology.

I founded Ultramono, a creative hub for digital art, music, and dialogue. My ongoing AvantGarden series merges futuristic aesthetics with both natural and synthetic elements, exploring themes like techno-utopias, new materials, and the bond between humans and machines. From meditative virtual gardens to energetic rave settings, these installations offer spaces for play, renewal, and creative exploration.

My art also looks at wellness and enhancement in an automated world. Inspired by the aesthetics of supplements, robotics, and synthetic biology, my work invites viewers to imagine a future where organic and artificial lives merge. I create digital sculptures using generative AI and 3D software—and I also paint these visions by hand to add a personal touch. I produce my own techno ambient soundscapes, setting the mood for each immersive experience.

Gaming culture plays a big role in my work. The vibrant, interactive worlds of computer games—full of bold visuals and endless possibilities—inspire my digital ecosystems. By building virtual worlds with game engines, I tap into the ever-changing spirit of the Internet, where communities form and ideas flow freely. My art redefines the boundaries between the digital and the physical, showing that our online interactions help shape our future.

I also celebrate playful, "kawaii" elements as symbols of joy, love, and protection. Throughout history, dolls and small figures have served as talismans of comfort. By infusing my work with this endearing aesthetic, I invite viewers to connect with technology on a deeper, more uplifting level.

Tanja Vujinovic is a multimedia artist whose work bridges video art, gaming, music, and research. Her ongoing mega-project, Ultramono, functions as a dynamic laboratory, presenting a series of complex art installations as multichannel videos, virtual reality artworks, and immersive soundscapes.

Tanja’s central artistic focus is examining humanity’s entanglement with electronic pets, devices, and synthetic environments that shape our lives. Her practice spans a variety of media, including virtual reality installations, digital sculptures, paintings, collages, techno tracks, and soundscapes. Synthetic beings in fractal landscapes are meticulously sculpted in 3D software and placed into virtual worlds, accompanied by intricate sound compositions. Many of her works incorporate AI-generated elements, seamlessly blended with 3D renders to create dynamic, evolving pieces.

Fifteen years ago, Tanja founded Ultramono, a constantly expanding fractal project and laboratory. One of her most notable early works, Supermono 2/3, featured hundreds of plush black objects responding to presence through sound and video echoes. This piece was exhibited at numerous festivals and galleries worldwide, marking a pivotal moment in her career.

Over the years, she has developed several major art and science projects. Plasmonika envisioned a poetic virtual world with fusion energy at its center, infused into the fractal nature of a digital landscape. Carboflora explored ecological concerns, creating a game engine-based world populated by Carboniferous-era trees, the primary source of coal on Earth. Sphere 3 investigated analog fields for space exploration and the origins of life on Earth. Another project, Arbora, incorporated a deep neural network capable of sensing and responding to human emotions through vocal analysis.

Since 2017, Tanja has focused on creating works in game engines, presented as walkthroughs, "machinima" videos, and virtual reality experiences. Many of these works have been published on platforms such as VRChat. Her Sphere 4/5 virtual worlds served as platforms for unguided tours and hosted events, featuring fractal objects, Dyson sphere-inspired energy harvesters, and reconstructions of Earth’s first flower based on scientific research.

Her recent projects, RoboSense and SynthPets, delve into humanity’s complex relationship with automation, AI, and the implications of a transhumanist future. These works feature synthetic digital creatures and hybrid beings navigating poetic virtual environments, exploring the liminal spaces where humans and machines merge into new life forms.

Tanja’s fictional cosmic settings pay equal attention to all elements—digital equivalents of living and non-living matter, hybrid beings, and human visitors—connected through invisible sound waves. Growth within these environments is accentuated by robotic noises, mechanized yet organic hums, stutters, and ambient soundscapes inspired by research in astrobiology and advanced technology.

Her complex art practice, spanning more than two decades, consists of exploratory and avant-garde digital worlds, electronic music, and audiovisual artworks. These projects have been presented to thousands of people across the globe.

Tanja is a recipient of numerous awards and research grants, highlighting her contribution to the fields of new media and contemporary art.

She graduated in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Arts in Belgrade, was a guest student at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, and has a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Theory of Visual Culture from the Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska, Koper.

Since 1997 her works have been exhibited at numerous galleries and museums, such as the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf, the Museum of Contemporary Art - Denver, Kunsthaus Meran, the Medienturm International Forum in Graz, the Cornerhouse Gallery in Manchester, the Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum, Kapelica Gallery in Ljubljana, Museum Fondation Vasarely in Aix en Provence, Künstlerhaus in Vienna and elsewhere. Her works have been presented at festivals, such as ISEA2009, The 15th International Symposium on Electronic Art, Ars Electronica Linz, Kinetica Art Fair in London, the Spor Festival in Arhus, the Zeppelin Sound Art Festival in Barcelona, FILE - Electronic Language International Festival in Sao Paulo and FILE RIO in Rio de Janeiro, among others. She has also presented her work at events, such as the Madrid Abierto in Madrid, Euroscreen21 at various locations, Continental Breakfast in Maribor, and Nuit Blanche in Paris. She has presented her Internet-based works as part of the Ctheory Multimedia's NetNoise, the Web Biennial Istanbul, Helium by Ballongmagasinet and NIFCA, and Sinnlos WebArt.

Over the past twenty years, she has received numerous scholarships and project support funding from institutions like MamaCash Foundation, Soros Foundation, ProHelvetia Foundation, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, Municipality of Ljubljana, Cultural Department and others. Her works have been included in many artwork collections like Sinnlos, Globalscreen, Supermono 1, Diva Station, e-flux video rental (EVR), Sonoscop Archive, Netnoise, CTheory, Borders of net.art, and others.
